"A friend of mine." He replied. "A scholar and member of the mages guild. He was a warlock in rank." He sighed. "He escorted me all the way down towards the ship which I took to get on this continent."
The monitor shook his head. "Nope. It's just a title actually. You see, it goes like this: You have a certain skill in magic and want to keep on training it. Now you have two options. Either you train yourself or you join the guild."
"Joining the mages guild has several benefits. You can train from skilled mages, can learn a whole lot of usefull spells, etc. However, there is kind of a hierarchy in the guild. Once you join, you'll be named associate, the lowest in rank. If you then start to perform duties and tasks for the guild, you'll be raised in rank to apprentice, journeyman, etc."
"Warlock is one of the higher ranks but there are even more." A smile appeared on his face. "I'm a master wizard in rank, two ranks higher than the warlock and I'm only outranked by an archmage." He sighed whishfully and looked into the distance. "I do hope, once I return back home, that I am going to be declared archmage."
