Lord Swiftbane looked out upon the mist-drenched land upon the ruins of a fortress. " I will have that fort as my own one way or another. " he spoke emotionlessly but with the light of glory in his eyes," My fort. We shall remain here, no more wandering we shall live off the cream of the land as we conquer." His horde yelled agreement and he smiled sinisterly.

Fox Glove slowly pushed her way through the thick undergrowth. In the distance she could see the tall grey ruins rising above the tree tops. "Almost there...then I can rest," she mumbled to herself.

The squirrell looked out from the trees. He looked at the vermin horde and shook his head."So, Swiftbane, you have come here to start your empire. You fool. You will fail, mark my words. I have SEEN your defeat, and these ruins will be blackened with the blood of your horde." Turning, he flew through the trees, jumping from trunk to trunk with ease, as befitting a squirrell. He stopped at a large oak, and climbed into it. Inside the tree was hollow, and filled with all sorts of old scrolls and odd powders and the like. The squirrell collasped into a dusty chair, sending dust into the air. This was his home. Across from him there was an old mirror. He looked into it and saw his reflection. He was a very large squirrell with strong paws. His fur was brown, tinged with white in places. His eyes were large and brown, full of intelligence and power. His tail was brown with a big white stripe running down the middle. From this he had been named Stripetail. But it was the object next to the mirror which had truly distinguished him. The object was a large staff, made of oak, with a very large crystal embedded into it. With this staff, Stripetail was able to do incredible feats, from shielding himself from arrows to seeing the future to raising the dead. He had been a young squirrell when he had first been given the staff, and told that the staff was magic. "Young lad, use this. The Crystals colors will change as you become more powerful. It is white now, but if you tap into its full power, it will become rose-colored, and glow whenever you hold it. It will allow you to do things that no mortal beast can do. Indeed it will make you immortal, if you use it enough." What the strange squirrell said had been true. With it, he had given aid to many creatures, both weak and powerful. The ordinary creatures loved him, the rulers of lands gave him a respect bordering on awe, and his enemies feared him greatly. He had been made a Lord for aiding the Badger Lord of Salamandastron and the Long Patrol Hares in driving a huge vermin army led by Lord Longblade from the west. Longblade was the father of Swiftbane, who had taken over the horde after the battle. Lord Stripetail shook out of his reverie. With the son of an old enemy controlling the fortress, he needed to warn the local residents of the danger. Lord Stripetail

At long last Fox Glove made it to the crumbling ruins. She looked around herself with awe at the massive buildings, towers, and walls. All of them where made of a dull grey colored stone and had vines and various plants clinging to them. It seemed to her that no one had lived here for countless ages. She moved closer to inspect the outer wall, looking for a way to climb over and as she did she stepped on a twig with a loud snap. The sound felt almost defaning in the silence and as she looked about her she realized how quiet the forest was. Indeed, not a single breath of wind rustled the leaves on the trees and she couldn't hear any insects or birds. A sudden chill washed over her, sending shivers down her spine. Something was wrong...

Lord Stripetail got out of his chair, and started rummaging through a large pile of scrolls. " A map of Rasevarika island-no. A map of Southsward? No. Tampertra? No. Where is that blasted map? Ah, here it is.' He pulled out a large scroll, and laid it upon a table. it showed the local area for at least a hundred leagues in every direction." He looked it over, muttering to himself and pointing to various points on the map. "Here's Bloodstone fortress, and roughly 50 leagues to the Southwest is what's left of Marshank. Noonvale is about 150 leagues to the northwest, I hope that Swiftbane doesn't know where it is, for the sake of the Noonvalers. The East Sea runs away from Bloodstone here, and there are mountains up here. There is a community of shrews and moles near Bloodstone, I must warn them as soon as possible." Rolling up the map, he put it back on the table. He walked over next to the mirror and picked up his staff, which began to glow as soon as he touched it. He then walked towards the front door. Passing through the door, he shut it , and began walking towards Bloodstone. Lord Stripetail

Fox Glove stood as if frozen, straining her ears to pick up the slightest noise. Nothing, there was complete and utter silence. She forced her self to calm down, after all she was no coward. If something was amiss she would find what it was and stop it. She stepped up to the wall and began to climb up the vines that covered it. Within minutes she had reached the top and began to make her way down the other side.
When she reached the ground she drew her sword and took a couple practice swings, listening to the swishing noise as the perfectly balanced blade cut through the crisp air. She studied the ruins around her. They where grey and dark, she could see no sign of movement.

Lord Stripetail followed the path towards Bloodstone, and looked for the small huts that were the trademark of the local residents. He reached a dip in the path. Looking down he saw a terrible sight. He had found the village of the shrews, or what was left of it. Horrified , he began to run down towards the smoldering village. Lord Stripetail

Carefully, Fox Glove made her way through the ruins. It was dead silent and the young mouse got the unsettling feeling that she was being watched. Doing her best to stay alert she pressed on checking inside ruined buildings and trying to figure out where she was and why this city had fallen to peices.

Lord Stripetail raced down the hill and quickly reached the village. It was, sadly , a sight he had seen before. The bodies of shrews lay everywhere. Here, a young male, there a older female. A terrible rage coursed through his veins. " Swiftbane! You will pay for this! These creatures were peaceful and caring creatures, and you and your horde slaughtered them!" He ran back and forth, going from hut to hut, searching for any survivors. Suddenly he heard something move. A small cry came from the building next to him. " Hush, Snowy, you little fool. Do you want them to find us?" He approached the hut, which was larger than the others and was not as damaged. He tried opening the door but it was shut. He threw himself against it but the door wouldn't budge. He then pointed his staff at it. "Turgeste!" The door shattered and collasped in pieces. He entered the hut, and looked around. The windows had been broken in, glass lay strewn on the floor. " Hello? Don't be afraid, I'm a friend." His deep voice bounced and echoed around the hut. A staircase stood in the middle. It lead up to another floor. As he began to climb, the stairs creaked and shuddered. He raced up the stairs, and reached the top. Here there were two rooms, one on his right and one on his left. He tried the right one first. It was shut. A small movement inside caught his ear. "Turgeste!" The door was blasted apart. From the doorway, he saw a small bed, and a nightstand. In the corner was a small closet. He went over, and opened it, but it was bare. Next he checked the bed. It shivered as he came by. He set his staff down on the bed, and got down on his knees and looked under. He saw a small shadow. " Get out of there. The vermin are gone. You have nothing to fear." Out crawled a young female shrew, cradling a bundle. She got up, and a cry came from the bundle. The same cry he had heard from the ground. She looked at Lord Stripetail with fear and anxiety. ooc: I don't really know what to say next. I doesn't look like Swiftbane's been posting and your character seems to be in a different place. Would it be better if I just said the stuff in my posts never happened and made my character wander into the shrew village? It's just roll playing is a bit pointless without character interaction.

ooc:Yes, that would be a good idea. I was eventually going to meet up with you anyway, but this way is better. This thread was dormant for months before we started posting.

Lord Stripetail pointed to the bundle." that must be Snowy. Are you his sister?" The shrew didn't reply. He wet over and picked up his staff off of the bed. the shrew yelled and ran for the door. " Stop! I'm not going to hurt you, now get back here and sit down. i want to talk to you." The shrew turned and looked at him. " who are you?" she said in a shaky voice. " I am a Lord. Lord Stripetail at your service. Who are you?." She bowed to him, and said."my lord, my name is Rosey, this here is my little brother Snowy. Our village was attacked by vermin and my parents told me to run and hide while they tried to fight back. So I ran in here and locked all the doors and hid. The moles who lived here managed to escape underground. " The squirrel sighed. "Rosey , as far as I can tell, you and your brother are the only shrews that survived. There are bodies of shrews everywhere, and most of the buildings are in ruins. This house we are in now is much less damaged than the the others. But I think we should get you out of here. I don't think its safe to stay here. Come with me." He walked out of the room. He turned towards the other door on the left side of the stairs. He opened the door and looked inside. Inside there was a another small bed and another nightstand. He closed the door and walked down the creaky stairs.Embers from the burning ruins nearby floated through. Rosey and Snowy came down the stairs and follwed him out the door. Lord Stripetail

Fox Glove flopped down on a stream bed and stuck her soar foot paws in the cool water. "Ahhh, much better," she said as she whiped sweat from her brow. She looked about her, trying to get an idea of where to go next. She had been lost in this forest for days and without food and water she didn't think she'd last too long. In the distance she could see wisps of smoke rising over the tree tops. "Finaly, some sign of life." She took a couple gulps of water and set on her way.
About an hour later she had reached the source of the smoke. She was absolutly horrified by what she saw. Here and there small fires where still smouldering in and about the ruined buildings. Bodies of shrews where scattered everywhere, the earth beneath them turned to a bloody mud. The young mouse drew her sword and cautiously entered the village. There didn't seem to be any signs of life anywhere but while she bend down to examine some foot prints she heard the sound of a door being opened behind her. Fox Glove wheeled around to face whoever it was...

As Lord Stripetail walked out the door, he saw a young mousemaiden standing there. She held a small sword in her paw. He spoke,"who are you, young maiden?". Lord Stripetail

Fox Glove whirled around to see Lord Stripetail and the shrews. "Oh!" she said and quickly put her sword away. "My name is Fox Glove. I've just been traveling and I really don't know the area. I noticed smoke and thought it would lead me to an inhabited place but...well it seems that not everone around here is friendly. Now then, who are you?"
