Cassandra leaned over the edge of a vertical mine shaft and stared down into the fathomless abyss. The young mousemaid dropped a small pebble down the hole and waited to hear the sound of the rock hitting the bottom. However, she waited for twenty minutes and didn't hear a thing. Cass gulped and slowly backed away from the shaft. "I really don't think this is a good idea. Maybe we should wait for the rest of the group," she declared in a shaking voice. "What's the matter, scardy-beast, afraid of going into the big scary mine?" A young tall otter grinned at her mockingly. He tied one end of a piece of strong rope to a nail driven deep into the rock walls and threw the rest down into the shaft. "Come on Cass, there's nothing to be scared of. It's and old mine abandoned a long time ago. Everyone else will follow us down. Just think," he called back to her as he lowered himself down using the rope, "once we find the treasure, we're going to be rich!" "Ok Norse, but if we die, it's all your fault!" Cass grabbed her backpack and made sure her dagger was firmly attached to her belt before climbing down the rope after Norse. On the way down, she caught glimpses of the bones of other less fortunate explorers lured into the mine by the false promises of fame and treasure. For inside the abandoned mine, the only thing the shafts lead to was death.
"You could have at least gotten an ancient map of this place or something," Cass complained as she reached the bottom of the rope. The shaft dropped down even further but the rope ended at a small ledge she could easily jump to. She backed away from the edge and ran into Norse who was hacking away at an upturned cart blocking the entrance to a tunnel. "How are we supposed to find our way through this labyrinth?" "Relax, I do have a map." Norse pulled out an ancient scroll from his backpack. "I got this from one of the mole diggers that survived the collapse. I know exactly where I'm going." The cart was reduced to splinters in seconds and the otter used them to make some torches. "Hurry up Samis or we'll leave without you!" he called as he lit one and disappeared into the tunnel.

Redstripe had been walking outside the mine when he heard yelling,"Whats anyone doing in that mine shaft?" The badgerscracthed his head.
Didin ran up behind Redstripe out of breath,"Mate why didja run away from me when I found you? Huh? Heys whatys that a mine? Anyone in there? Are they alright? Can they survive down there? Are you going to Help them?" The mouse just kept asking question after question.
"Didin...Didi!...DIDIN!!!! Stop talking already!" He reached over and picked Didin up by the scruff of his neck,"Thats why I run from ye, your just don't know ow ta close that wee mouth of yers. You like a hares full name at first tis like, oh lets hear it, then halfway thrugh hearing the thirds hares name your oldin yer ears screaming, quiet quiet!!" Redstripe put Didin down and walked into the mine looking down the shaft,"Man thats a long way down." He looked ober and saw the rope,"Dang it won't holm ma wight, Didin you go since your a lot lighter then I."
"Alright...but did ya aft ta old me by my neck? You know I hate that.: He grabbed the rope and started lowering himeself down."I pop em in the nose ifin he grabs me by my neck again. Show Redstripe jus who has the muscle around ere."
"Huh?" Cass heard Redstripe, Didin, and Zennith and instinctively waved the torch she was carrying around as if she was swatting invisible moths. She whimpered quietly as her bright eyes scanned the area for what had made the noise. "There's something in here with us!" she cried.
In the tunnel, Norse sighed and put his palm to his face. Why did I decide to bring her along? he asked himself. "Look Cass, for the last time, there's nothing to be afraid of!" Suddenly, Norse ran into something and dropped his torch. "What the-!?!" His voice echoed throughout the entire shaft.

Didin dropped down onto the shaft bottom and looked around, he saw light down the tunnel and started walking into it. He drew his short sword and almost lobbed off his ear,"Whoops. Eh he he hehe." He raised his buckler and got closer to the light to see who was down here.
"You look familer," Redstripe looked at Zennith and scratched his chin," Can't quite place it, but I ave this weird feelin we ave met afore."
"Wha-? Ha ha ha!" Norse laughed out loud as the torchlight fell on an ancient skeleton. In the weak light, he thought that he had seen it move. "Nice job Cass, now I'm all jumpy." The otter walked past the pile of bones and moved over to the side so Cass could walk past him. The timid mousemaid scurried past him but Norse waited for Samis to catch up. "Oh, hello. Have we met?” he asked as he spotted Didin.
"That's not funny! I thought that you were hurt or something. Don't scare us like that, Norse!" Cass whined, unaware that Norse and Samis were still behind her. She spotted another skeleton up ahead. "Stupid old thing!" She kicked the pile of bones with all her might. The skull of whatever beast had died rolled back down the tunnel. As soon as Cass turned around, a bony paw grabbed her arm.

"No, we aven't met afore." He held out his arm with the buckler on it, his hand protruding from the shield,"I'm Didin, me freind up at the top is Redstripe the Strong. E's a badger an is too heavy ta climb down ere with us." He tried to copy how Redstripe spoke with the rustic sounding voice."But he may find another way down." He paused breathed in and started speaking again,"So who are you? How many of you are down here? Are you all here searching for somthing? Did you come prepared? Are you armed? Do you know how to fight? How old are all of you? Do you know its dangerous down here?" He asked all of these questions without taking a breath.
"Some other beasts and me pal Didin went down there. I do nay know infin they need elp or not, but I ave ta find a way down there somehows." He looked at the edge of the chasm, dirt hardpacked."Hmm, i wonda." He jabbed his claw into the dirt and it stuck. He put one paw on the rope and the other in the dirt and clibed over the edge. His claw stayed in the dirt and was held in place,"Perfect." He started climbing down using his claws to hold himself in the walll until he hit stone and couldn't climb down like that."Alright, I guess I ave ta use the rope." He grabbed the rope and looked down."I'm that bright one." He let go of the rope and touched ground and looked into the cave,"DIDIN!! can ya ear me!?"
Norse wondered how Didin could talk so much without having to breathe. If he tried that, he would have passed out from the lack of oxygen. "Well, my name is Norse and my companions are Samis and Cassandra. We're looking for the treasure that's supposed to be down here. Since this mine is abandoned, we probably won't have anything to fight but we're prepared anyway. So there's no reason why this place ould be dangerous, right Cass?" He looked around for the mousemaid. "Cass?"

"Well, no you see...Redstripe taught me never ta go into any mines...Snakes like making them their homes." He looked at Norse."Ya lose your freind?" He started taking a breath.
At that point Redstripe grabbed his mouth and silend Didin,"You ask too many question mate." He looked at Norse and nodded," E didn't drive ya crazy with all is questions did e?" Redstripe's girth blocked out most veiw behind him," If he starts again just give im a light rap on the nose." He let go of Didin and looked around," Is there another one with you?"
