Gwen sat down in the long grass and looked at her surroundings. There was nobeast but her in the area as far as she could tell. She reclined casually against an old oak tree and was about to fall asleep when she heard a cry. She opened her eyes as she heard it again. Silently, she drew her dagger. It glimmered in the setting sun as she stood up and walked to her left. The noise seemed to be coming from a bush about forty paces away. Gwen knelt beside the plant and moved away a few scraggly branches. Then she saw a tiny baby dormouse, wrapped up in a rough olive-colored blanket. The infant saw her and turned its small head in her direction. Gwen caught a glimpse of an aumlet around his neck as she reached towrd the babe. "It's okay, young one, I won't hurt you." she cooed as she pulled him toward her. The dormouse smiled as Gwen picked him up. She bounced him softly as she whispered, "It'll be okay, hush, you'll be okay." She eyed the aumlet carefully as she sat down with the baby. It was an orange opal set in silver. "Where'd you get this?" The infant just cooed softly as he snuggled against the folds of the ragged blanket.

"Well, he looks like he hasn't been fed much." Gwen said, "Should we take him to the Abbey? I'm about out of food, the only things I have are some chesnuts and dried prunes, and this one's too young for hard stuff."

Gwen drew her bow and an three arrows. Grasping two arrows in her teeth, she stood up. "What's going on here?" She notched an arrow to her slender bowstring.

In the shadows the young female Marlfox watched the confrontation. She was ready to do what she did best:wait until the battle was over, then scare the victor and loot the corpse. She grinned slightly.Nobeast can discover her,and she fully intended to make use of the element of suprise when the battle was over.
