The waves crashed lously against the face of the cliff sending spraty high into the airand resounding with a loud roar. Sanimus the otter stood overlooking the sea, lost in thought. He was a native of this island, who lived with a smal trivbe of otters a few leagues. He was supposed to be gathering nuts anbd berries for dinner later that night, but Sanimus was playing hooky, and had only gathered a small pawful of berries.

At the same time, Reddal the hare was in trouble. His boat was holed, and taking on water. He was so busy with his bucket, throwing water overboard in an increasingly frantic manner, that he did not at first notice the island. He judged the distance, the white rings of fur creasin around his dark eyes as he squinted toward the landmass. He could make it. He began to furiously paddle with the plank of wood he'd been using as a paddle, his fur somehow even darker now it was wet, and some of they dye running off his crimson red jerkin and green leggings. He could make it.

As Sanimus looked out once again over thesea, and in the distance he saw a small boat floating in the water. it was flailing with the waves, carried up on the wave-crests, and lashed down in the valleys. there was somebeast in the boat, from what Sanimus could see, it looked like a hare, but from this distance he couldn't be sure.. From the way the creature was acting, he looked like he was in some diress.

As Reddal got closer to the island he could just make a figure standing on the clifftop, though it was almost to far away to see. Ceasing paddling for a precious few seconds, he waved frantically, hoping that the mysterious creature would see him and send for help.

Sanimus noticed the creature beguiin to wave at him. There was no doubt now, the reature was in serious trouble. "I'll get help!' He called outas loud as he could. There was a pwth nearby which wound along the cliff and down, gradually towards a small beach area. The problem was that this area ws screened off by large rocks which jutted out of the sea. You had to be pretty close to see it, and by the time you could see it, the rocks would wreck your boat and send you into the sea. From what the otter could tell, the boat the ghare was sailing in was 2-3 leagues from the beach area, headed in that direction. "if he can navigate the rocks he should make it." He said to himself as he hurried al;ong..

Reddal heard the shout, and although the words were lost in the wind, he got the general idea. Suddenly there was violent jerk, and the hare nearly fell down flat. He peared over the side to see what had happened he noticed the sharp rock raising it's dark head from the water. Picking up the plank once again, he prepared to navigate the dangerous minefield of rocks.

Sanimus was making his way down to the shore. Berry-gathering forgotten, his concern now was to make sure the hare made it safely ashore. The outer rocks had claimed many a boat and many a traveler, and the water there was deep, so unless you were a good swimmer, trying to swim to the island from there was not a good idea.

The hare wielded the plank with skill, pushing away from rock and manouvering as best he could, but every so often he would slip up and hit a rock. The little craft was taking more damage with every second, and filling with water faster than he could get rid of it. If that otter doesn't fetch help soon, I'm done for.

Sanimus finally reached the beach and peered outwards towards the rocks where he could now see the boat and its inhabitant. It had managed to get though the rocks, which told him that this beast was a good sailor. Judging by the slow progress he was making however, the boat must have suffered some damage from hitting the rocks. Sanimus made his decison. he jumped into the water, and with the effortless grace of the otters began to swim out towards the boat. He was a good swimmer, and soon was close enough to the boat to see it had several holes in it. "Jump out!' He called out to the hare. "let it sink. I'll carry you to shore and take you to my village."

"Didn't like the craft much anyway..." Reddal muttered to himself, before jumping ship and entrusting his life to the otter. The water was cold, the damp clinging to his fur making him heavy. Hares were not made for water.

Sanimus sank into the water as the hare climbed onto him. he raised his head and turned as the boat drifted onward, pushed by the waves and sinking slowly. finally it disappeared completely beneath the waves. Sanimus then turned and began to swim towards the shore. it was slower going niow, with the added weight of the hare.

Reddal allowed the otter to carry him across the waves, clinging on while at the same time trying to form a streamlined shape to assist his rescuer. At was a strange experience, like swimming without effort.

Sanimus finally reached the shoreline, and was greeting by raindrops. It was beginning to rain, and it was a good 5 leagues to his village. "You're not going to be dry anytime soon" He said to Reddal, who was busy wringing out his clothes as best he could.

"Hmm.." The hare murmered in agreement. "I'm assuming you don't live alone out here anyway... There a place nearby I can rest up for a while? Maybe grab something to eat before I go on my way again?" The hare checked his weapons, not looking up at his rescuer.
