'THE Stripetail?' Stripetail chuckled, as he stepped forward. "So redstripe has been telling stories about me.. that badger always could spin a yarn. Most of the time, though he embroideers things. For example, me killing 50 beasts at once with just a look. Didn't happen." Stripetail said, smiling. "I've killed beasts before of course, but not by simply looking at them. I've used more forceful measures." He looked at the young mole, who was clad in a small tunic, which was dark colored. he had a friendly face, as most moles did, and his voice had the burly tone of molespeak. "Thank you, my good mole. and what might your name be?'

"Moi name's Hurliy. Moi granfer Gurim talks lots bout you'm to." Hurliy closed the gate after Stripetail entered and lifted the heavy beam back into place."Whew, Master Redstriope makes tha look easy." He rubbed his digging claw across his brow and sighed. He knew Redstripe was sleeping and looked around,"Jally t'wil show ee to your room." He started towards the great hall, turned and made sure Stripetail was following.

Thank you' stripetail said, keeping close to Hurliy. The Great Hall building towered in front of them. The Buildings was thousands of seasons old made of thick red stone. The abbey was built over the ruins of the old fortress of Kotir, which had been drowned by the diverting of the MossFlower river.

Hurliy spotted Jally coming towards them."Hurr, well Oi'm off ter ee kitchen fer some grub afore bed." He turned and nodded to Stripetail,"G'Noight Master Strioptail." Hurliy headed towards the kitchen, hoping there was still some Deeper an Ever Pie left.
Jally was a mouse, in fact Jally was short for Jallycaline, she was a mousemaid. Young but with an air of authority from watching over the dibbuns. She smiled at Lord Stripetail,"Ah you must be Lord Stripetail, just as Redstripe described you."

'So, you've heard the stories about me too?' Stripetail smiled. "Figures.... well, If you could kindly lead me to Redstripe. I'll be much obliged. I have an offer to make to him, on a question of great importance...'

"Of course, everyone here knows you from Redstripe. He talks alot about his questing days, and those who he quested with." She started up the steps towards Redstripe's room."He's gotten on in years, so don't be surprised if he's sleepiong, or just staring at the fire."
To anybeast it looked like he was sleeping, but if anyone knew Redstripe they could tell instantly he was awake...the silence gave it away.

"Knowing him, He's probably still awake " stripetail said as he followed Jally up the stairs. "he got to be over a hundred seasons by now , but badgers can live for hundreds of seasons, and can put up a fight even in their twilight.' Redstripe was in his, Stripetail thought, and it gave him pause. He was fond of the badger, they had been through many adventures together, but Stripetail had learned over his many seasons that all beasts have an allotted time and season.

"Mayhaps, but Redstripe does sleep alot these days. We always joke and say he's resting for somthing big." The mousmaid laughed at it, as she would any joke in her life. Jally stopped infront of a door and opened it. Redstripe was seemingly asleep inside."I'm dreadfully sorry Mister Stripetail, but he's sleeping. It would be rude to dis..."
"Its never a rude interuption ifin its Stripetail at ma door Jally." Redstripe looked up into the doorway and smiled, Jally nodded and left."Stripetail me ole mate, how ave you been?" Redstripe tought about getting up, but his chair was just so comfy.

"I've been well thank you. I just got back from Salamandastron. " Stripetail said, entering the room and closing the door behind him. He noticed the badger's head was now fully covered with white fur, when he had last seen him, it had been mostly gray with some white mixed in. the badgers eyes were those of an elderly creature, but Stripetail still sensed the power hidden within. Redstripe still had a few battles left in him. Your vision, i imagine, is not as good as when we last met, so I'll move closer. I have a matter of great importance to discuss with you, old friend." Stripetail said, coming over and sitting down in a nearby chair.

Redstripe pointed at Stripetail,"I'll ave you know my eyesights better en it ever was!" It didn't help that he was actually pointing a few feet to the left of Stripetail. Redstripe sighed and dug into his tunic pocket and pulled out a pair of eyeglassess, small metal bars with thinly cut crystal lenses. They worked wonders.

"you never were a very good liar Redstripe. Just as well, perhaps... You were pointing 5 feet to my left,' Stripetail sais, giving the badger a once over. 'Now to business. Lord Ruthos of Salamandastron is dying, and a new Badger Lord must be found. Ruthos has no offspring that I am aware of, so a placeholder must be found. you were the first badger who came to mind.' Stripetail said smiling.. " So Redstripe, will you take Ruthos's place as Badger Lord? If you are interested, then we must leave at once for Salamandastron. Ruthos will most likely not see the next spring.." Stripetail said. "And it would be best if he proclaims you his sucessor himself, rather than having me do it.. the Long Patrol is far more likely to accept their Lord's decree than mine, even though my reputation within the Patriol is very good."

"I meant to point to your..." He mumbled the rest and looked at Stripetail. He remained silent until Stripetail finished and scracthed his chin,"So old Ruthos is diein. I ain't see him since he resharpened my axe. I don't know though. I'm old Stripetail, an the dibbuns...they won't let me go so easy." Redstripe wanted to just jump up and grab his armor and axe and sprint to Salamandastron but he knew he couldn't."Give me the night to think on it and I'll have your answer, but more then likely I'll end up going." He sighed and adjusted his glasses,"But on other matters, what have you been up to since our last meeting old friend?"

I've been on business of my own. Its been twenty seasons, and I've been busy. Apart from helping Ruthos in his dying state, I've been everywhere from Noonvale to loamhedge. The Noonvalians sure can cook a mean meal. BOne of the best meals i've had in a good while.the maidens there can sing a mean song too, I think its the spirit of Laterose at work in that." stripetail said. He paused. " I know the dibbuns are fond of you Redstripe, but Salamandastron cannot be without a Badger LOrd. Salamandastron protects a huge area, and the last thing we need is knowledge of the vacancy to spread. We'd have armies of vermin trying their hand at the fortress before you could say 'dinner'. I've worked with too many Badger Lords to ever allow that... I'll give you a couple days, old friend... but I cannot spare much more than that.. Time is not our ally.."

"Aye I know. But It'll only take a night, really just to pack my stuff. Then on ta'morrow I'll tell the dibbuns I'm off on another adventure. Maybe then they'll let me go." He sighed and took his glasses off. Had it really been twenty seasons since he last saw Stripetail? Time was really flying by. This might be his only chance to get out there and fight a great battle, do somthing amazing. He wasn't gonna let it go.

'Make sure that we stuck up on as much food as we can carry.' stripetail said breaking into a big smile. 'so we won't need to stoop to peeling bark off of trees and berries off of bushes. I've had to do just that on occassion, and its very slim pickings, and the bark does a number on my teeth." He made a face. "We'll leave at sundown tommorow Redstripe, that will give you time to say goodbye. it will also allow me time to sharpen my sword, polish my staff, and stock up on supplies. I'll work on your axe and armor as well, If you wish. don't worry, my friend..' Stripetail said. "You'll see Redwall again after tommorow. the Dibbuns won't be dibbuns anymore, they'll be older, but they won't have forgotten you. I suspect you've been longing for one last great adventure, well, you're in luck, tommorow at sundown, it will begin." He patted the badger on the right shoulder. "It will be like old times. yes, we're older, but it doesn't mean we still can't kick vermin butt when push comes to shove."
