The time for storytelling at the Abbey had come again, and this time, the dibbins were in for a special treat, as the Seer Stripetail himself would be telling the story. Normally, storytelling was handled by the Badger Mother, but sometimes others would take up the mantle. the Abbot would tell tales about his youth, or one of the mothers would make up a silly story up to get laughs from the young ones. Since the Seer was often away from the abbey for long periods, It was rare that he was present for storytime. His stories were usually full of adventure, and danger, and the dibbuns often begged him to tell them those stories, which he often declined, as he was usually busy with his work recording his travels, or tales he had picked up from different villages and regions. Tonight, however he would indeed, have a story to tell.
Stripetail sat down in the main hall in a chair, and set down a faded knapsack, which bulged from the contents it was holding. " Come now children" the Badger Mother said to a row of youngbeasts that were clamoring around her as she entered, voles, moles, Mice, Rabbits and sparrows. " Everyone have a seat please. His Lordship is going to tell us a story." Soon, each dibbun was seated, and one by one the rest of the abbey crowded around the chair. A warn fire crackled in the hearth, as autumn was upon them, and the night grew chiller whith each passing moon. " So what tale are you going to tell us, milord?" asked a Mouse named Fullrose, or Rosey, as she was often called. " This tale, Rosey, is one about the great Warrior, Martin, who helped found this abbey, many ages ago. Unfortunately much of what we know about the very earliest years of the Abbey is based on stories written many hundreds of seasons afterwards, so whether the tales are accurate or not is hard to say. But, I have come across some information in my travels which indicate that the Abbey was built on the ruins of the old fortress Kotir, which was home to a wicked cat named Tsarmina, who ruled Mossflower with an iron fist and with great cruelty. Any beast that was taken captive to Kotir was rarely seen again.
Martin helped lead a revolt against her, and in the process, Kotir was flooded and destroyed, and Tsarmina was slain. Eventually the Abbey was built, and as it turns out, right on top of what was left of Kotir. The battle had claimed the lives of many vermin, and well, their spirits did not rest easy. You see, children, from the very beginning, Redwall Abbey... was haunted!" Stripetail said. The children and parents gasped and murmurs filled the room as Stripetail reached into the knapsack and pulled out a large and very ancient book. " Do not worry, my dear children, the only spirit that haunts the abbey these days is Martin himself, as he continues defending this abbey the way he did in life. But back when the abbey was built, the spirits were very different... and wanted revenge on those who had slain them." Stripetail said opening the book to the first page, dust rising from the pages " Our tale starts... in the first winter at Redwall..."

Martin fiddled with the pommel of his sword as he watched the labors continue on the Far left Wall. " It will take us many seasons to finish this abbey, Gonff" Martin said as his best friend, Gonff the mousethief, ambled by " Indeed, and I hope we will have peace for many years. " Gonff said "Unfortunately, my experience is that peace rarely lasts for long. There's always some tyrant out there trying to extend his reach" Martin said. "This abbey will be refuge for good beasts, those who seek a quiet life, and perhaps, for warriors like myself." Come now matey, you talk like this isnt your home!
