"Follow me!" Running up the hill, the fox lead the small group into the forest, picking up speed as he went. "We must hurry, or they will be able to shoot us." Dodging around trees, the fox kept running through the forest until they came to a meadow. "Get down! Here, it's better to stay low and move quickly and quietly." He started trekking across the meadow.

Bane kept up easily at the fox's side, glancing back now and then at the others. From behind, he heard the sickening snap of a bowstring quickly followed by the thud of the arrow hitting it's mark.
One of the beasts in the back fell and started tumbling down the leave scattered slope. Without missing a beat, Bane turned on a leaf, and ran back after the fallen slave. He skidded to a halt and knelt hurriedly beside the beast. She was a middle aged rabbit, and struggled to stand, the arrow buried in her upper thigh. In too much of a hurry to speak, they glanced at eather, then Bane shrugged under her arm and darted into the dense bushes. An arrow hissed by, clipping the wolf's tail. It whistled by in a puff of tan fur, and Bane curled his tail with a grimace and sped up as much as he could.
Moving in the dense parts of the bush, Bane and the rabbit followed behind the fleeing slaves. they went as quietly they were able and Bane hoped hard that they would not be heard.

Reaching the other side of the forest, the fox came to an abrubt stop. He waited for the others to catch up. Turning to the direction of the vermin, he watched. Apparently, they didn't know where they were arriving. The first row was slain in a matter of seconds from a sudden volley of arrows. The second, seeing their comrades slain by an invisible foe, turned around and fled.

Bane froze as he heard the arrows clash with the first ranks. Then, at the padding sound of their retreat, he stood up slowly, holding out a hand, he ordered the rabbit to remain still until he motioned for her to do otherwise.
She slumped back in the bristling moss and ferns as quietly as possible, wincing and shifting into a more comfortable position.
After a pause, Bane stood straight, the ferns brushing about his knees. "Sir... Fox? Is everybeast sound?"

"Yes. I believe everyone is." Turning back to the woods, he waited as several squirrels, martens, and mice came out, being lead by a pine marten. The marten was fairly tall, only about a head taller than the average otter. He had a hat with a feather in it on, a green tunic with a brown vest, a longsword as his weapon, and a green traveller's cloak. Seeing te fox, he looked slightly puzzled. "Jako? Is that you?" The fox smiled a bit. "Yes, old friend. It is." The marten was apparently not satisfied. "Turn around. Now, show me your back." When the fox had showed him the silver cross marking, he was satisfied. "I thought you were dead." Never mind that. We have things to discuss." The maren looked around. "Not here, though. We'll talk about it at the hollow." He looked past the fox and saw the slaves and wolf. "I take it all of you are starving. I'll tell you what. When we get back, I'll have the chefs cook you a feast. How does that sound?"

Bane helped the rabbit to catch up with the rest. He followed with her as they started to follow the marten.

Walking through the woods, the marten lead the party of travelers and ex-slaves to a cliff. "Welcome to Mistfall Valley. This is a place that Excervum wouldn't dare attack. As you can see, it's also a paradise." He motioned his hand out to the valley, full of mist, rainbows, and waterfalls. "Come with me over to the Infinite Stair. It's the only way into the valley, and if you fall, it's a long way down." Walking over to what looked like an enormous stone staircase, he started leading the others down into the mist.

Bane, who in all reality was a course and selfish beast, not one for natural beauty or recources, found that he was overwelmed by a strange emotion at the sight of the valley.
He was a cad, who prefered cheap drink and easy money to much else, but what lay before him was primal; this was, he thought, what had stemmed religion, love, admiration, astoundment and the thought of porpose and meaning in the lives of creatures sinse the beginging of time. With tumbling thought swimming in his shallow head, the wolf shrugged under the rabbit's weight before moving down the stairs. ...He'd never been unable to speak. His smooth tongue could out talk any Inn keeper or maiden, but not this, there was no way to belittle something so perfect. He walked in silence for a long time, numbly following the marten.

When they had reached the bottom of the stairs, there was a door with a large hare standing guard next to it. He was large, muscular, and armed with a mighty halberd. Jako waved to the hare. "Oi! Open the door and summon some healers. Oh, Rawnear, alert Jonathan that I to discuss some matters with him." The hare saluted, then open the door. "Yes, sir."

Bane and the rabbit openly stared at the hare as they walked by, then after they were through the doorway, Bane shifted the rabbit maid to one of the younger slaves walking nearby, and the wolf trotted ahead to speak with the marten. "Sir," he began, pulling even with him and slowing to a clipped walk. "Where are we? ... If I may ask."

The marten turned to the wolf. "About ten miles west of the Mossflower Wastes. You cae from the castle, didn't you?"

Bane shook his head, answering as honestly as he dared. "I'm from the sea.. if I were to be truthful with you, and didn't plan on getting tangled up in all this." He glanced over his shoulder at the group of freed slaves. "I came by a slave ship, and followed it to the castle..."

"Well, that's very interesting. What was the name of the ship?"

"the Steel Rose," the wolf answered listlessly, "but that's an old chapter at this point.. My crew tossed me overboard and sailed her away.. I'm an ex-coursair, I believe." He chuckled lightly, as if he'd only recently come to terms with the muttonay of his crew and the loss of his ship.
