"Stoopid Cap'n Moonstripe, leave me 'ere t' rot, har! I'll show 'im, 'e'll curse the very day 'e was born!" A low, coarse, yet young sounding female voice growled. The voice belonged to a midnight black ferret, who was pacing feverishly, her dark brown eyes fixed on the ground. The adolescent was clad in tattered white trousers that barely went past her knees and nothing but a ragged, once white button-down shirt. A cutlass, with nicks here and there in the blade, was shoved in a broadbelt that fit snugly around the ferret's waist. Earthpelt was barepawed, a fact that she was soon to regret as she tread upon a thorn. "Yowch!" she yelped. With an angry grunt Earthpelt sat down and examined her footpaw.
(Uh...interupt anyway you wish! Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong!)

"Be ye freind or vermin!?" Hitchaw yelled fro some bushes hiding from her veiw. He held his javelin at the ready and kept a wary eye on this ferret, sizing her up.She looks prety much stranded an armless, but Redstripe always said, don't misinterperate the way a foe looks...or somtin like that. He kneeled down hiding waiting for her to answer his question,"I repeat, be ye freind or vermin!?"

The ill-tempered Earthpelt's small ears, or more like ear, twitched as sound reached them. Friend or vermin? Ha, har! The ferret inwardly scoffed, and quickly, or as quickly as she could without harming herself with her wounded footpaw, got to her paws. Her dark brown eyes surveyed the area, looking for the owner of the voice. "Why don't ye' come out and see fer yoreself coward!" she called out, curling her lips back in a snarl to reveal jagged, stained teeth. Earthpelt's paw wandered to the hilt of her cutlass, but her eyes did not leave the trunks of the trees and undergrowth around her. The adolescent was unused to land, and did not know how to look for signs of life. Again her ears twitched, trying to pick up any other sounds.

"Coward? Ye got it all wrong miss, if you want to survive in these lands ya ave ta be cautios of all those around you. But if you insist." Hitchaw stood up, he was big for an otter, biger than Earthpelt, his mucsled body twitched slghtly as he stood up, his javelins but hit the ground and he stood with it in his right paw."So, miss, I say again, be ye freind or vermin, meanin, do ya wish arm on any decent beasts in these parts?"

Earthpelt's dark brown eyes traveled over every inch of Hitchaw, head to footpaw. 'e's bigger 'n me, aye, that's true. She thought warily. Normally the ferret would have leapt into battle at the very sight of a goodbeast, but this was unknown territory and Earthpelt was tired and her footpaw hurt anyway. "I means no 'arm fer the time being sah." she answered. This was unusual for her. She was thinking things through, not the way she acted on board a ship. Earthpelt hooded her eyes causully, trying to seem as relaxed as possible. Ar, this ain't yer! Why won't ye' act normal? A voice in her head demanded angrily, and Earthpelt shook her head ever so slightly. Truth was, she was dead scared. Young and in an unfamiliar place.

"Aye, thas good ta hear, now I won't ave ta club ya a good one." He sighed and stepped out of the bush into the clearing where Earthpaw stood,"But ifin ya plan ta urt good beasts this ain't the place ta do it. Theres the mighty fort Salamandstron, but there are the couple hundred fightin ares and the badger lord ta worry about." He grinned,"But as long as ye don't urt no one, ye ave notin ta worry about. The names Hitchaw by the way."

Earthpelt tipped her head to one side as Hitchaw told her about the hares and badger, and a slight chill of fear traveled up her spine. Sounds right dangerous fer a beast like meself! She thought. She chuckled nervously. "Aye, I be a thief but I'm not a killer." Earthpelt said quietly. This much was true about the young ferret. In her fairly short life she had not killed anybeast unless it was nessicarey for her own safety, despite how many ships she, with other crewbeasts, had plundered. "I be called Earthpelt." she added, trying to follow the otter's example. She'd have to get used to this if she was truly stranded the way she thought she was. Earthpelt quickly toyed with the shark teeth necklace about her neck, turning her eyes away from Hitchaw.

"Well Earthpaw, as long as ya don't take all that they ave." He turned and started to walk away but stopped and turned,"Ya look a wee bit ungry there Earthpaw, I got some fish cookin back at me camp."

Earthpelt's ears flicked ill-temperedly once more as she heard Hitchaw call her Earthpaw, that was not her name. Aye, but I thinks I've been called much worse names afore, can't do much 'arm. She thought, calming the thoughtless, wild side of her before she opened her mouth and said something stupid. This was so strange for the ferret, to be speaking calmly with an otter and not fighting or arguing. But Earthpelt's doubts were almost instantly forgotten at the mention of food. "Aye sah, I 'aven't eaten since Cap'n Moonstripe left me be'ind." She grunted, furiously spitting the name Moonstripe "If ye' wouldn't mind a vermin like meself comin' along o' course." Earthpelt added wryly.

"Tus me, I've been around worse then you. But, I ain't never turned down no ungry beast." He turned and walked towards his camp. There was some smoke in a clearing ahead. There was some some fish cooking over the fire on a stick.

Earthpelt blinked gratefully, if she got food for acting this way she might behave herself more often. A crooked smile crept across her face when Hitchaw said he'd been around worse. The ferret was not entirely wicked, something she had inherited from her Mother, but she sure could make life miserable if she wished to. Earthpelt quietly followed Hitchaw, her dark brown eyes wandering around the area with ill-concealed awe. She had seen forests before, yes, but this one somehow seemed different. The midnight colored ferret scented the fish before she saw it. "Grub shore smells good sah." Earthpelt commented, not using Hitchaw's name and calling him sir, just in case. She didn't want Hitchaw thinking she already completely trusted him.

"An please stop with the whole sah thing, its driven me crazy. Earthpa...wait a sec...ave I been sayin yer name wrong?" He scratched his head, slamming his javelin pointdown into the dirt."Jus correct me, I don't care, but can ya please jus stop callin me sah?"

Earthpelt almost growled 'I'll call yer anythin' I'd like rivermutt!' but she thought better of it. Dew wot 'e says, at least 'till ye' get the grub. No sense makin' a botch o' gettin' somethin' ter eat. The ferret thought. "Sorry sa - er, 'itchaw." she caught herself. It felt strange to call a beast bigger, and probably older, then her by his real name. "Aye, yer got th' earth part right, but thar ain't paw in thar. It's pelt. Earthpelt." she explained, but almost as soon as she said it she felt stupid and a bit silly. What type of vermin was she, sitting on her paws and talking to a woodlander, when she could easily jump into battle? Earthpelt toyed with the hilt of her cutlass, but fear was still stopping her from doing anything stupid.

Hitchaw smiled and laughed,"Sorry Earthpelt, didn mean ta get it wrong." He sat down by the fire and grab a stick, that had a fish on the end and held it out to her."Ere, tell me ow it taste, I wanna know ifin I should become a cook."

The young ferret tipped her head to one side and hesitated. Was this a trick of some sort and the fish was tainted? Why else would a woodlander offer food to vermin? The scent of cooked meat tickled Earthpelt's nose, causing it to twitch, and the gnawing of hunger in her belly grew stronger. Still cautious, the dark furred ferret took the stick and sat down opposite to Hitchaw. Soon, Earthpelt's suspisions, as well as most of the fish, were gone. The ferret ran her tongue over her lips. "Mmmmm, better'n anythin' I've 'ad on ol' Spiderfang, that's fer shore." She said, her crooked smile returning. Earthpelt nibbled on a bit of fish bone and absentmindedly studied the otter across from her.
